Sustainability & Environmental Awareness — Solar-Powered Manufacturing, ETP, GOTS Organic Wool
Environmental Awareness
Committed to Environmental Sustainability
Premier Felt Mfg. Co. is committed to being environmentally aware, and actively support programs that improve our environmental performance reduce our company's environmental impact. We seek reduce the effects our business activities have on the environment by supporting initiatives such as:
- Utilizing Solar Panel Installation across our Manufacturing Facilities
- Recycling of solid waste
- Reduction of material water, and energy consumption
- Minimizing Waste: Using our ETP (Effluent Treatment Plant)
Our sustainability commitments, in detail
Solar-powered manufacturing
Rooftop solar PV across our Bichhwal facility supplements grid power for carding, scouring and finishing operations. Bikaner sits in one of India's highest-irradiance solar zones (5.7–6.5 kWh/m²/day average), making rooftop generation an obvious environmental and economic win.
On-site Effluent Treatment Plant (ETP)
Wet-felting and coloured-felt dyeing produce wash-water that contains lanolin, dyes and process chemistry. Our on-site ETP runs incoming effluent through a multi-stage treatment process (primary screening, biological digestion, chemical neutralisation, tertiary filtration) before water is recycled back to the plant or discharged within Rajasthan State Pollution Control Board norms. Zero untreated water leaves the facility.
Solid-waste recycling
Wool short-fibres, edge trim and off-spec material are routed back into lower-density felt grades or sold to insulation and agricultural-mat manufacturers as feedstock. Cardboard, plastic, scrap metal and pallets are segregated and routed to local recyclers. Landfill contribution from our process is approaching zero.
GOTS-certified organic wool sourcing
For our organic line we source wool that meets the Global Organic Textile Standard's full chain-of-custody requirements: organic-certified husbandry, no synthetic pesticides or veterinary chemistry, animal welfare auditing, and traceability from fleece to finished felt. GOTS also restricts all chemistry used in scouring, dyeing and finishing.
Wool is the original circular material
100% wool felt is fully biodegradable — pure wool decomposes in soil within 6–12 months and returns nitrogen to the ground. Compared to synthetic alternatives (polyester needle-punch, polypropylene insulation, foam padding) wool's end-of-life impact is closer to zero than to landfill-eternity. For applications where biodegradability is a procurement requirement (sustainable packaging, agricultural mats, biodegradable insulation), our 100% wool grades are the lowest-impact option in the catalogue.
Reduced material, water and energy consumption
Year-on-year we benchmark consumption of raw wool, dye chemistry, process water and electricity per kg of finished felt. Process optimisations — closed-loop dye baths, heat-recovery on calenders, LED lighting retrofits, motor VFDs — have measurably reduced inputs over the last decade.
Local employment as community sustainability
Our 350+ direct employees come almost entirely from Bikaner and surrounding rural Rajasthani villages. Sustaining skilled rural employment in a region with limited industrial alternatives is itself an environmental and social contribution — keeping workers and shepherds in the wool ecosystem instead of migrating to overcrowded metropolitan slums.
Sustainability questions, answered
Is wool felt biodegradable?
100% wool felt is fully biodegradable. Pure wool decomposes in soil within 6–12 months and returns nitrogen to the ground. Blended and synthetic felts (polyester or polypropylene needle-punch) are recyclable but not biodegradable. Our GOTS-certified organic wool line is the most sustainable choice in the catalogue.
What does GOTS certification mean?
Global Organic Textile Standard — the world's leading standard for organic textiles. It covers raw-material origin (certified organic wool), chemistry (restricted substances, low-impact dyes), processing methods, social compliance and full chain-of-custody traceability. Premier Felt holds active GOTS certification for our organic line.
Do you publish a sustainability or ESG report?
We are happy to share specific environmental data (energy mix, ETP discharge readings, solid-waste recycling rates, GOTS-organic share of production) on request — particularly for buyers running supplier-ESG assessments. Email info@premierfelt.com to request our sustainability disclosure pack.
Can felt be recycled at end of life?
100% wool felt is biodegradable rather than recycled — bury it or compost it. Synthetic needle-punch felt (polyester, polypropylene) is mechanically recyclable through standard textile-recycling channels. Many of our automotive customers route end-of-life felt parts into next-generation acoustic-insulation feedstock.
